Rigorous research to generate and apply behavioural insights to improve integration and cohesion in policy and society
Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) are experts in generating and applying behavioral insights to inform policy, improve public services, and deliver results for citizens and society.
In the UK, evidence suggests there is increasing social polarization. BIT has completed reviews and meta-analyses of interventions that reduce prejudice, intolerance, and mistrust in communities, and that boost social cohesion and resilience of young people against extremism. They have found promising interventions for increasing social cohesion, including building empathy, increasing perspective taking and reducing prejudice through social mixing interventions.
BIT’s work is helping to identify the interventions that are most effective in reducing polarization and boosting social cohesion through real world large-scale interventions. If the interventions prove to be effective, the insights gathered will have the potential to be applied in a range of settings, such as schools, media, and to inform dialogue and peace processes.
BIT has partnered with Reach plc on “Britain Talks”, a project that brings together different communities and shares stories of everyday life in the UK. BIT is supporting “Britain Talks” by delivering interventions that will increase the likelihood of a mutually positive interaction.
Unbound began supporting BIT in 2018. BIT’s work advances our Strengthen Belonging strategy area, where we are interested in exploring whether evidence-based social integration initiatives could be applied at scale.
